From the Wadden Sea to the Alps, Germany’s biosphere reserves represent diverse habitats with rich biodiversity. Old beech forests, meadow orchards and clear lakes form unique natural and cultural landscapes. As part of the family of “National Natural Landscapes”, they are an important component of the national strategy on biological diversity. The National Natural Landscapes today consist of 18 biosphere reserves, 16 national parks, 104 nature parks, and 3 certified wilderness areas.

Against the background of the alarming decline in global biodiversity, national parks are of outstanding importance for safeguarding species and habitat diversity. In response to the worrying state of nature, the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) was adopted at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. The establishment of a global network of terrestrial and marine protected areas, and the simultaneous establishment of their effective management, are the main goals of the CBD’s Programme of Work on Protected Areas.

Their objective is to promote sustainable development in all areas of life and economy, where people and nature are in harmony. As such, they are internationally representative model regions.

They have the goal of protecting biological diversity and encouraging people to play an active role in the achievement of this. The inclusion of children and young people in educational activities is an important part of attaining this goal.

National Parks are a showcase of the natural features of a country. They are at the centre of public awareness. The tradition of National Parks in Germany is relatively young. Now this tradition is nearly 50 years old. The first National Park in Germany was created in 1970 when the Bavarian Forest National Park was designated. National Parks got a special push in 1990 with the help of the National Park programme of the former German Democratic Republic. Now, the 16 designated National Parks in Germany are widely recognised and accepted among large parts of the population.

These fascinating landscapes and valuable ecosystems extend from the Baltic Sea to the Alps, from Southeast Rügen to Berchtesgaden. Integrated into the worldwide network of UNESCO biosphere reserves, they are internationally representative model regions. They aim to promote and facilitate sustainable development in all economic and other areas of life, in harmony with nature.
