Den Verlust der biologischen Vielfalt zu stoppen, stellt eine ebenso große Herausforderung dar wie die Bewältigung des Klimawandels. 2002 wurde deshalb in Johannesburg beschlossen, die gegenwärtige Verlustrate an biologischer Vielfalt bis zum Jahr 2010 signifikant zu reduzieren. Zentrale Maßnahme zur Erreichung dieses Ziels ist der Aufbau eines weltweiten Schutzgebietssystems. Schutzgebiete können je nachdem, welches Managementziel als vorrangig definiert ist – strikter Schutz oder Pflege und nachhaltige Nutzung natürlicher Ressourcen – , ihren jeweils spezifischen Beitrag zum Erhalt der biologischen Vielfalt leisten.
